You tin can paint with any type of paint y'all want. Every bit for longevity, that is anyone's guess..

I had an art teacher years ago, in New Zealand, who used commercial paints with his creative person paints. He used Chromacryl student grade paints and "flat" house paint. I accept a painting here he did for me 24 years ago that looks just like the day he painted it. He prepared all his supports with flat white firm paint. He used to purchase the sample pots of colour from the paint store for a few cents. Always flat/satin, never gloss.

This is what got me thinking about this topic. At Lowes the other day I noticed a bunch of gallon pigment cans on the floor behind the pigment mixing booth they were all like $5. I think this would salve lots of coin. ( for sure applications)

I use latex paint sometimes, especially white if I've run out out of my artist class white. Information technology works great, I've used all different finishes, whatever I have laying effectually. .
If you use different paints, similar a gloss with a satin, adjacent to a flat, or mix them together, it doesn't actually matter because you can put a varnish or other finish, over it all when your done to make the shines all match, if you what to.

My take on this may be a fleck unlike.

If you want to practise things for your home or for gratis for friends and relatives so using a product like this is certainly your option.

If you are selling your work, I feel it is of import that you lot use student quality and or creative person quality paints. Many household paints have additives like a fungicide or insecticide that if used in the firm may not be a salubrious selection (outside paints are certainly quite laden with these additives.). Likewise many of the pigments may not be of the aforementioned quality. These paints are designed for an intended use and it generally isn't fine arts.

There is an article in the Golden Paints spider web site by Mark Golden talking about the differences. Y'all may want to read this article to gain a different perspective on the subject.

Have to agree with Howard here subsequently some bad experiences with this blazon of pigment peeling off the canvas. You don't want to sell an artwork and have the paint peel off in the hereafter………..if yous program to sell your fine art, utilise the best y'all can purchase. You and your clients will be happier as they age…..Tony

I'm in agreement with Tony and Howard on this. I've been working with a conservation grouping and 1 of the biggest problems they have is yellowing and fading top coats of varnish. Huge amounts of efforts are beingness fabricated to relieve older paintings that have their pigments breaking down or oxidizing. What you don't desire is to sell a painting that is going to be an expensive proposition down the route to conserve or restore for the patron.

As an art patron as well as a painter, I want my investments pieces to concluding and if I have the time to frame them properly and hang them where they volition have the least corporeality of damage, and then I want the artist to utilise the best efforts when executing the painting with their materials. All of my work is sold with a complete list of the products I have used on the canvas and then the long term intendance of the painting isn't going to be guess work. I think my patrons and clients would have a fit if I said I used house paint on any of my pieces (I image mural artists might have a different view though).
I recently saw a Georgia O'Keeffe work having to exist restored because the varnish had yellowed and contradistinct the colour of the painting quite dramatically.

So there is the horrible upshot of flaking where the paint is lifting from its support. Yous don't want your painting to look like this after a few years:

Nearly art supply stores will provide you with larger scaled supplies if yous inquire for it.

Some of these paints are much worse than others, and do not last near equally long as artist-course acrylics. Some of the pigments will fade. The adhesion may be much poorer.

I wouldn't use them unless I researched the specific production very carefully, particularly if I valued the longevity of the pigment films and adhesion, and non-fading and non-failure.

Nova Color is a supplier of large (gallon, five-gallon) quantities of artist-grade acrylic paints at reasonable prices. The quality is very proficient, and they are popular with muralists. There are other painters who also like them.
