There are cutscenes in the final ending that refer to side content; however, the most notable scenes include your decisions during the main story. If you want to unlock a specific scene at the end of Fallout 3, then keep reading to find out about every major ending in the game.

How Many Endings Are There In Fallout 3?

Fallout 3 has lots of individual endings that you can receive at the end of the story, depending on your choices and the content you chose to complete. Many small differences can appear in the ending cutscene; however, these personalized cutscenes aren't new endings but instead an add-on to the main ending.

A few of the personalized cutscenes you can receive include different scenes for gender or appearance, scenes that only play if you have a high or low enough Karma, and scenes that play depending on if you finished certain side quests.

There are four main endings in Fallout 3 since there are only a few ways to finish the main storyline and Broken Steel quests. The four endings are largely different, and they each require you to make a certain decision during the main questline.

How To Get Every Ending In Fallout 3

There are a few major endings that you can receive in Fallout 3, depending on how you complete quests during the main story and the Broken Steel DLC. You can also receive a second ending to the Capital Wasteland's story if you play the Broken Steel DLC because it adds extra story quests that connect to the base game's main questline.

The Good Ending

During the "Take It Back!" quest, you have to make a final decision about Project Purity. There's a chamber inside the Jefferson Memorial that somebody needs to enter to save the purifier; however, any human who enters the chamber will be irradiated and die. The good ending will occur regardless of who goes into the chamber to save the project. However, if you want to receive the most virtuous ending in Fallout 3, then you should go into the chamber and sacrifice your character.

There are many other ways to solve this problem without your character getting irradiated. The most notable method is to let Lyons go into the chamber, and then she'll get irradiated instead of you. This ending is a little eviler than doing it yourself; however, it's not as bad as siding with the Enclave. Allowing Sarah Lyons to sacrifice herself isn't the only way to get around this problem, though, because you can also send followers into the chamber.

The best way to avoid going into the chamber yourself is to send Fawkes. Fawkes is a Super Mutant companion, so he's immune to radiation and won't die inside the chamber. Fawkes is available as a companion after you leave Raven Rock. This ending is perfect if your character isn't a hero but also isn't willing to let the people of the Capital Wasteland die. The option to send Fawkes or other companions into the chamber is only available if you have the Broken Steel DLC.

The Bad Ending

To receive the bad ending, you need to use the Modified FEV Virus that the Enclave President Eden gives you during the main story quest, "The American Dream." You can place the Modified FEV Virus into the Auxiliary Filtration Input next to the chamber during the final scene in Fallout 3 while at the Jefferson Memorial. The FEV Virus will then spread across the Capital Wasteland, and you'll receive the bad version of the ending.

Since the FEV is dangerous and not safe for most humans, the majority of the people in the Capital Wasteland will die. However, the Enclave will still survive, which means that you don't kill everyone in the Wasteland if you make the decision to insert the FEV Virus. You can still complete the Broken Steel questline if you choose to contaminate the Capital Wasteland.

There's also another bad ending; however, it's not as interesting as spreading the FEV Virus around the Wasteland. When you are supposed to speak with Lyons or go into the chamber, you can choose to do nothing at all. In this ending, Project Purity will explode, and fresh water will be a distant dream for the Capital Wasteland. Although this ending is still bad, it's better if you want a more neutral ending.

Broken Steel DLC - Good Ending

After you finish the main storyline in Fallout 3, you'll wake up at the Citadel, and you can start the Broken Steel DLC, which includes a new questline that focuses on the state of the Capital Wasteland following the events at the Jefferson Memorial.

In Broken Steel, you follow Brotherhood Of Steel characters as they try to defeat remnants of the Enclave. You get a chance to attack an Enclave base and speak with characters like Elder Lyons again, which allows for more pieces of the Capital Wasteland's story to come together.

The Broken Steel DLC includes a new ending; however, there aren't as many outcomes since this questline is linear. You have to destroy an Enclave Air Force Base during the quest "Who Dares Wins" by choosing to fire at the "Adams AFB Platform" while inside the Satellite Tower. This is an opportunity to get a good ending if you chose an evil option inside the Jefferson Memorial. The final scene in the Broken Steel DLC shows the Enclave Air Force Base blowing up.

Broken Steel DLC - Bad Ending

There's a bad ending for the Broken Steel DLC as well. During "Who Dares Wins", you need to climb a Satellite Tower and activate the "Fire Payload" button to select which target you want to destroy. Choose "Citadel," and you will destroy the Brotherhood Of Steel base. This will substantially weaken the Brotherhood Of Steel in the Capital Wasteland and end the Broken Steel DLC. The surviving Brotherhood Of Steel members will attack you if you choose to blow up the Citadel, but only after they see the ruins for themselves.
